I am trying to close fiscal year 2009 and one of the steps is to run Change Fiscal Year. How is this done? I've looked at all of the tasks in GL and I can't seem to find what I need.

The Next Fiscal Year was created. I followed the instructions in the manual that say to select Edit then Fiscal Calendar. My 2010 fiscal year periods are there but when I go to post a journal entry to 2010 it says Edit Batches - 2009. In order for me to get 2010 I have to try to post a batch to Next Year which I don't want to do.

If you've already created your Next Fiscal Year, then from what you're saying 2009 is seen as your Current Year (a year in which the last month occurred within 2009) and 2010 is your Next Year. In which case, to post a batch to your 2010 fiscal year, you would click the Next button in the toolbar, enter and post the batch there.
The fiscal year (eg 2009-) that displays is the year your fiscal year ends.
If the batch you want to post to fiscal 2010 is in your Edit Batches 2009- window, you can highlight the batch and use the Copy button to Move the batch to a Next Year, New Batch. After, click Next which will open the Edit Batches 2010- window, locate and post the batch to 2010.
Has your accountant provided you with fiscal 2009 journal entries that have been entered? If so, you'll want to run the Close Current Fiscal Year option located in the Maintenance menu. When this is done, fiscal 2010 will become the new Current Year and the Next button will disappear from the toolbar until it is needed again when it's time to open fiscal 2011.
Even if you Close Current Fiscal Year prior to receiving your accountant's year end journal entries, you are still able to post them using the Post to Prior function (up until you open the Next Year, or 2011).
To clarify, when you create the Next Year, normally you would not edit the Fiscal Calendar. Adagio Ledger automatically creates the next fiscal year calendar for you based on what the fiscal calendar is for the current year.

2009 is our old fiscal year. Our current fiscal year is January 1, 2010 through to December 31, 2010 (also the calendar year). I want our Current Fiscal year to be 2010 and I need to know how to do that because I thought I had followed all of the steps.

I have already Closed the Fiscal Year. The change to the new fiscal year did not happen. This is my problem.
This has to be the most non user friendly accounting software I've ever used.

Hello Rebecca, What version of Adagio Ledger are you running see Help | About)? There are significant differences between year end processing in these two versions. You mention "One of the steps is to run..." which sounds like you are referring to some kind of document. Is this one that you've downloaded from our web site, or an internally prepared document for your organization?

It's Ledger 9.0C (100511) and the checklist says Adagio Academy Adagio Ledger Year End checklist courtesy of Ralph Allan, Business Computer Centre.

Hi Rebecca, The tech tip for running a 'Ledger 9.0 Year End' that you are working from does mention that you can see a new fiscal year get created and is visible from the Edit Fiscal Calendar process. But it does not mention anywhere that fiscal year dates need to be changed. Do any of the fiscal calendars in your Ledger have dates for periods that do not match the year, and if so for which year(s)? Did you change any of the dates in the Edit Fiscal Calendar function? If dates were edited, then this is the source of the problem. I suspect that you have a fiscal calendar '2009-' but the dates were edited to be in the year 2010. Because your fiscal years exactly match the calendar year, you should be able to look at a fiscal year from the Edit Fiscal Calendar and have all the periods be in the same year as selected. Make a backup of your data, then edit every available fiscal year to have the period dates match the year. What is the latest fiscal year available from the drop-down? Is is 2009- or 2010-? If the latest year is 2009- then you have not yet run the 'Create Next Fiscal Year' process from the Maintenance menu. Do you have a 'Next' button on the toolbar to the right of the 'Batch' button? This will indicate that the Next Fiscal Year has been created.

Hello Rebecca, I'm sorry you are finding the process frustrating. Unfamiliar processes often are, and year ends only occur once a year. Have you thought about having your Adagio Consultant spend a few moments with you to walk you through the necessary steps? If you don't know who this person is, then our customer service department can provide their contact details. There's also a webinar that walks through the process.

"...the checklist says Adagio Academy Adagio Ledger Year End checklist..." I think you have an old one. Try this one for version 9.0. Also check out Softrak's checklist here .

Yes, I have a Next Year button to the right of the Batch button.
When I click on Edit ---> Fiscal Calendar there are three fiscal years available from the drop down list. 2008, 2009 and 2010 and all of the dates look okay.

Thanks Rebecca.
OK, so I suspect that when you click the Batch button on the toolbar, the title of the window that appears is 'Edit Batches' - or if you are using Ledger 9.0C then the title is 'Edit Batches - 2009'? And if you click the Next Year button, then the title of that window is 'Edit Next Year Batches - 2010'?
If this is the case, then to close the year 2009, the function to run is called 'Close Current Fiscal Year', and this will be available on from the Maintenance menu. Running this will list all of the processes that still need to be performed, such as posting 2009 batches, closing income statement accounts to retained earnings, printing and purging reports, and so on. There may be other processes you want to do that are not on that list, such as printing financial statements or other reports.
When everything has been performed from that list, the Proceed button will be available. Once the Current Year is closed, then the 'Next Year' button will disappear. And when you click the Batch button, it will now display 'Edit Batches - 2010' as the title. It is at this point that 2009 is officially closed.
You could still post adjusting entries to 2009 using the 'Post to Prior Year function', if necessary.
