Setting up general ledger for new company

I need to set up a separate general ledger for a new company. I don't see anything within the help files that tells me how to do this ie create new sub-directory, copy x files into directory, edit company profile etc.
I expect it to be the same as when you roll over at year end, but, I need blank files - no history brought forward.
As well, is there anyway to have a blank AP and AR file associated with it?

OK, ignore this - I looked at the GL and realized it has the "create" mode. Better question is how to handle fiscal calendar set up when the fiscal period runs January 12 - Feb 11th.

Hi Linda
I hope you mean the fiscal year, not the fiscal period!
The only crucial question that you need to get right when creating a GL is how many fiscal periods are in the year - 12 or 13. Unless you are absolutely sure the answer is 13, then pick 12.
After you create the GL, it's easy enough to go into the fiscal calendar (Edit | Fiscal Calendar) and modify the period dates and descriptions. Tedious, but easy.
I hope you found the create button for AP and AR. If the datasets share certain tables (terms, banks, account sets, billing cycles) or form specs, it is possible to copy them from one to the other, but you have to know the file names, which is beyond the scope of your question. You CAN'T just copy over vendors or customers, though, they must be exported/imported.

The whole year is runs from Jan 12 to Feb 11, 2009 - or Feb 11 2010?

This gl is being set up for a contract that runs January 12th 2009 to Feb 11th 2011. I am still trying to get a definitive answer from the contractor whether they expect reports that run on a 30 day basis ie Jan 12 - Feb 11th, Feb 12th - March 11th or whether we can do a two week report in each year to make this manageable ie Jan 11 - 31, then Feb 1 - 28, Mar 1 - 31 etc.

Hmmm - this sounds more like a task for Adagio JobCost.

Not really. This is straight expenses such as cablevision, phone costs, office rent etc. The contract is for 12 months, but the government agency wants the reporting to co-incide with standard reporting periods ie Jan 1 - 31, Feb 1 - 28 etc.
The problem is that there is a two week period on either side, ie Jan 12 - 31, 2009 and Jan 1 - 11, 2010. The gov't agency expects a 2 week report for both. I can't use fiscal periods Jan 12 - Feb 11th, Feb 12th - Mar 11th etc as the gov't has said they want all reporting to be within the proper calendar month.
Now I do have a problem as I have set the gl up as 12 periods but will need to go to 13 periods to accomodate the extra reporting period.
Any advice? Have not yet posted anything to the gl but have to payables.

So your first period is Jan 12-31,2009, and the second period is Feb 1-28, and so on. The thirteenth period will be Jan 1-11, 2010. In the second year, the pattern will be the same.
Once the 13 period year has been created, you can edit the dates of period beginnings and endings in the fiscal calendar. They do not have to be equal periods.

You can set up a new GL, export the accounts from the old on, and import them to the new one.
Then move all the GL files to another folder and move the new set in to replace them.
When you open GL it will recognize that AP has a batch for it.
