The maximum number of data fields allowed per report is 250 whether they are just fields inserted in the report, or fields within several formulas. Individual formulas do not count as only one field - QR counts ALL fields within every formula PLUS all the actual fields on the report to get the total. Thus, the warning generated is not speaking of the width of the fields, but the actual number of fields existing anywhere in the report.

The only way to avoid this is to redesign your report in such as way as to reduce the number of fields used.
