What version of Adagio OE are you using? If it is an older version, perhaps the email system file is out of date.
Do you have the Request Receipt option selected? Check the Email Options screen uner the Email menu - perhaps try without.
Does your Anti-Virus Checker software have any email settings that might need investigation? For example, excluding the program file oewin.exe from the check for mass mailing.
The problem may be related to Outlook Express and security settings there, such as spem prevention. You might want to try tweeking Outlook Express to see if anything helps.
