Hello all,

I have a need to import some item description changes to our inventory items.

However, as simple as this may seem, I do not want to change all of the descriptions but rather only a select few (too many to edit) that are not in a range.

Would you have a suggestion as to how I can go about that?

Here's the data that I want to import:

Item number - because I suspect I have to have it
Item Description, it should be overwritten but only the items necessary.

Am I thinking this is more difficult than it needs to be?

Peter

1) Export your Product List to Excel, From File Export or using Smart Finder.

2) In Excel delete all the ones you don't want changed.

3) Change the remeaining Descriptions as needed.

4) Import the changes selecting "Update only"

Hi Peter,

You mentioned that you want to change descriptions for just a select few items. As the desired items are not in a range, what is the criteria that determines whether you want to edit the item description or not? Do these items contain a certain piece of text in the description? Are they inactive or no longer used? Answering this question will tell you how easy or difficult this will be.

Indeed you only require the two fields Item number and Item description in an Excel sheet in order to import changes. You can create the Excel sheet by using the SmartFinder on the inventory item field, editing the columns to include only item number and description (and required search criteria if necessary), generate the desired search, then export to Excel. If you know the search criteria to select items, then use this within the SmartFinder. With Inventory 8.1A, the SmartFinder allows up to 5 search criteria, separated by AND/OR.

If your criteria is more complicated than what the SmartFinder allows, you could use Adagio GridView to create the file and export to Excel.

When importing the Excel sheet to update descriptions, you only need Item Number and Description. If you needed any other columns to perform the search, then set Fillers in the import template to skip those columns.
