After a visit and closer look today, a couple reports I tried actually printed but would not preview.
It's a SHARP AM-900 USB printer that uses a Virtual Printer Port (seems like most of them do).
Using a different printer (and therefore driver) worked. The alternate printer was on another workstation but interestingly it was also a USB printer and the driver showed that it was also using a Virtual Printer Port - but works great.
Just one of those quirky things that Windows loves to drive us crazy with I guess...
