Hi Steve:
There is a setting in GridView "Defaults" [F2] named "as table (Excel 2007 or later)". I don't think it's the solution but the help screen says "This field only displays if you are using Excel 2007 or later". That suggests that GV somehow detects the version of Excel in use and presumably uses that knowledge when deciding on the file format.
