The export/import function is the only real way to go. Test it out using sample data and you will see that there isn't too much drama at all.

I have noticed that with the latest version of Ledger 9.0C (110131), it fixes formerly unfixable errors using the Rebuild function of Data Integrity Check. So before you give up on repairing the damaged data, make sure you run DIC on it using that version of Ledger. You may have to run DIC a few times before it fixes everything.
