2. Yes, but your formatting options are greater. Also, Word can merge directly to e-mail (Word 2007).

I just pounded out two possible processes off the top of my head. I'm sure there are others. It depends what your client is trying to accomplish. Are the "thank you's" all to be e-mailed? Faxed? Mailed? Additional attachements?
