Your thinking is correct, as long as you haven't run period end processing as of a later date.

There are many reasons why the balance did not match your G/L balance. Before we get into the list of possible reasons, does the AR Trial Balance as of today agree with the GL balance as of today? If it doesn't, that is where I would start troubleshooting.
