It is generally not a good idea to delete old items - they tend to be stored in unexpected places and their deletion causes data corruption if you are not very careful.

What I recommend for my clients is the item number change feature of Toolkit for Adagio (www.dakotasoftware.com). It has the ability to merge two items together, which essentially deletes one of them. The trick is that I set up a new item called "Deleted Items" and merge hundreds or thousands of items into that new item. Since the toolkit searches through all the Adagio databases, it is much less likely to cause data corruption.
