Is Thunderbird MAPI-compliant?

I get conflicting answers when I ask that, including using a Google search. One source said that it uses Simple MAPI (unlike Outlook) and the only requirement is to make Thunderbird the default mail client.

I expect that someone with Thunderbird experience can provide a definitive answer.
