An invoice batch was closed. A manual check batch was opened and an entry made. That was closed to return to the invoice batch but the icon was grey and could no longer be opened by the user. Access to the same batch is available by the System Account and another user. How do we re-establish the original users access to this batch?

Rather than closed, was the Invoice batch grid minimized instead? Look in the bottom left corner of the Adagio Payables window.

Otherwise, it might not have closed properly. Try logging the user off the network and then back on again.

If that doesn't work, it might help to know what version of Payables and what type of network you have.

While Doug's reply is spot on and almost definitely the answer, another possibility is that the invoice batch is open but appearing on a second monitor which you don't see because you have only one monitor. If you suspect this to be true, select Window | Original Sizes | Yes.
