If I import a number field, will a blank value be interpreted as "0"?
i.e.
27
36

12
76
Will the blank be taken as a zero?

Perhaps. If you are importing a physical inventory, use -1 to leave the current quantity unchanged. "0" (Zero) will be interpreted as meaning you have none on hand.

Hi Andrew

Actually, I messed up the first year (2012) and all my quantities sold last year are a total of 2012 and 2013. I know what the total sales are for last year so I'm just going to import the correct number. There are items that are showing a sale number but they should be zero. Will a blank value be treated as zero or must I import a 0?

Hi Mike:
By "blank value" do you mean that the import file has (1) a row for that item but a blank cell instead of a zero or (2) no row at all for that item. I suspect you mean the latter. In that case it's almost certain that the item will not get updated and will retain its' current value. Therefore you should import that item with a 0 quantity. Which import process are you using?

Hi Bruce

It's (1) a row for that item but a blank cell instead of a zero. When I do formulas in excel I hate seeing zeros so I normally set up my formula to check for 0's and not display them - just habit. I should have left them this time. So I had blank cells to import and thought someone could tell me quickly if they would be treated as zeros. I've gone ahead and imported them, and yes, blanks are treated as zeros.

Thanks

Hi Mike

If you keep transaction history (and everybody should because there is no downside to not doing it), then the utility Toolkit for Adagio by Dakota Software (www.dakotasoftware.com) can retroactively compute the correct sales figures for you, with press of a proverbial button.

Yes, I realize that Toolkit for Adagio costs money, but your effort is worth something, and there is also a greater chance that you will do something wrong the way you are trying to do it.

If you already own Toolkit for Adagio, it's a slam dunk.

Steve
