Sheryl:
The best way to access Adagio through the web is to set up a server using Terminal Services or Citrix (more capabilities than Terminal Services but costs more). This gives you very good performance and security.

Having said that, what do you want to accomplish exactly?

For one person to work from home? Or for a large number of remote users to do their work on a daily basis? How many users? What type of accounting activity: GL/AP/AR or high-volume sales-order based?

Wouldn't you rather have mature, stable, supported, feature rich accounting software available over the internet?

We have an Adagio site supporting 90 remote sites simultaneously using Citrix Server. Remote desktop is deployed with every Windows (and Mac) machine. Is there a reason you want to run your accounting in a browser? Remember, in July both Sage and Intuit had outages lasting more than 12 hours of their web based solutions that prevented their clients from taking orders, printing invoices, taking payments or processing payroll.

Your answers to Bruce's questions will also help determine whether an Adagio / Terminal Server solution would fit your needs.

Remember, it's accounting. I can imagine a large hotel chain benefitting from a web based solution, but the list of industries/applications where it offers much more than a buzz word solution is limited. (Sorry, to my old eyes, web based solutions seem identical to the time sharing accounting solutions popular in the 1970's that people fled from to embrace the personal computer.)

Items to ask your web based provider:
  • In the event of any failure on your part, how can I get my data off your servers?
  • How does your feature set compare to the feature set of products offering a different deployment strategy?

P.S. I just checked your profile - feel free to call the accounting department at Bearskin Airlines who have been running Adagio for many years. I'm happy to provide a contact name and phone number.

Thanks for your response.

We would like to have 4 or 5 simultaneous users. We are using gl/ap/ar. Ideally we would like it to be hosted so that all updates and backups are taken care of.

Remote access would also be a bonus.

Please send contact for Bearskin Airlines.

Thanks

OK, so "hosted" doesn't mean a web-based interface using a browser. It means that someone, somewhere stores your data on their server. They are responsible for backups and updating the software with new releases.

Most of the companies doing that are using Terminal Services or Citrix. Sage is a prominent example in this market. You access their server using your web-browser but once on their server, the screen interface is exactly the same as if it was on your desktop.

I acknowledge the benefits of someone else doing the IT work for you. However on the other side of the ledger, your data resides somewhere else.

  • What if the host goes out of business?
  • Can you trust that your data is secure and private at all times?
  • What if you want to add a 3rd-party application (i.e. payroll)?
  • What if you want to get a copy of your data? How would you do that?
  • How difficult is it to get the host to restore last night's backup?
  • What if, as Andrew pointed out, access to their site goes down for a number of hours?
  • What is the monthly cost for this (in)convenience?
I would still recommend Terminal Services. It's less expensive, your data is local & private, performance is good, maintenance is centralized to one computer/server and you're in control. Plus you can get access from remote locations (like a cafe in Europe)!
