does anyone know how to search for a check by the date month and dollar amount?

Yes, preview any report on which the check would be included, for example the Vendor Transactions report, and then enter the dollar amount in the cell to the left of the binoculars. It will find all instances - make sure to enter the comma if the dollar is over $1,000.00.
