I have a suggestion for Softrak and I'd like to see if there's any other interest in this feature. If you can see a use for this, please post a response with the hope that they'll take notice and include it in a future release.

I would like to see the ability to setup an alert on a dataset so that when you open it up in an adagio module it pops up a user defined message.

For example, when we are performing year ends for clients we will copy their dataset into a folder such as DATA\2006, so that they can still drill down into any details there if the need arises. While we do setup a hardcoded shortcut to these separate datasets, the potential for a user to mistakenly load an old dataset is still there. It would be great if we were able to post an alert so that upon logging in, a user is confronted with something like "This is the 2006 Dataset. No entries should be made here without proper authorization."

Changing the background colour works so-so, but I think that an alert would solidify this. I've seen too many apparently "colour-blind" users to feel confident relying on the background alone.

With the approaching, "soft year-end" this particular example may lose its merit, but there are a great deal of other situations where this would help out.

One more that I've got is for an RGA (return goods authorization) workaround. Our client had a need to automate their returns process, but did not want to issue an actual credit note until they took possesion of the goods being returned. So we setup a second OE/AR dataset with the live order/invoice files copied into it each night. They could then issue a credit note on this dataset as an RGA which would not affect their live inventory. The OEGLOB file does not get copied in so it would be great to be able to put an alert message in the company profile saying something to the effect of "This is the Return Goods dataset - if you are not processing an RGA, please exit."

Please feel free to post any other uses you have run into or can foresee. Or just leave a short comment in support of or opposing (I suppose there could be someone!) the idea.

Thanks,

Hello Ryan,

Thanks for the suggestions. We are looking at ways to improve the dataset management in a System Manager.

Here are a couple of other ways you could prevent people from posting in the "wrong" dataset:
  • In Adagio Ledger, use Edit | Company Profile to close all the fiscal periods in the copied general ledger. Then use the security settings to prevent people from inadvertantly opening them up. Also, change the company name and desktop colour too and provide additional visual "cues". If someone enters a batch, they won't be able to post it, and you can archive the posting error batch and retrieve it in the correct Adagio Ledger for posting.
  • In the RGA system, use "security" settings to severely restrict the types of transactions that people can enter, as well as changing the background colour and company name.

All other suggestions welcome!
