Hi Steve,
If you "Cancel" the first pass, then the sample data has been deleted (or moved to the Backup) and doesn't exist for the second pass (unless you restore it). If the sample data isn't there, the service pack doesn't offer to replace it (so you don't see the problem).
However, if you restore the sample data and re-install the service pack so that it does try and replce the sample data for a second time, the "stall" doesn't occur.
Also, if you install the service pack onto a network drive where the sample data exists, cancel the process, then install the service pack onto a local drive where the sample data exists, then the slowdown doesn't repeat.
