Alpha Prefix for Cheque Numbers? - 06/16/16 02:17 PM
When I set up my company profile in AP it offers via tick box to let me have alphanumeric cheque numbers, but when I go to the bank account setup to put the starting cheque number in it won't let me put anything but a number in...
Am I missing something? Or is it just over-promising...
Thanks!

Hi Hugh:
The setting in the Company profile is "Alphanumeric manual check numbers". It is for manual cheques, usually when you are recording a payment that was not a printed cheque (ie. an electronic transfer). In those situations, the tracking number might include letters in addition to digits.

Thanks Bruce, that's what I was afraid of... I was hoping to prefix my EFT payments with a letter so that I could at a glance tell what method I'd used to pay something. Right now if someone phones and says they're looking for payment you can't tell them to look in the mailbox or their bank for it without an extra step or memorizing what your number sequences look like.

If you have your EFT payments running through a separate "bank", then you can make the numbering sequence wildly different than your printed checks. Having your EFT payments run through a separate bank keeps them separate in another way too.

Hi Hugh,
Sounds like you should be looking into the Adagio EFT module. Adagio EFT will number EFT payments differently then regular checks without disrupting your regular check number sequence. EFT check numbers look like EFT-BBB-EEE; B for the batch number and E for the entry number, for example EFT-004-012 for the 12th entry of the 4th EFT run. After processing the EFT run in Adagio, it will create a file for you to upload to your bank so you don't have to worry about rekeying all the payments for a second time (the same way as PayDirt creates a file to upload payroll entries). With EFT you can also email the vendor their payment advice so they know that they are looking in their bank for the payment, not in the mailbox for a check.
Talk with your Adagio dealer and they will be able to provide you all the details.

Andrew, yes, that's the workaround I ended up developing.
Lauren, I don't initiate the EFT payments, I'm just booking them after the fact when my supplier has already raided my bank account, so I don't need the module as the only utility I'm looking for at present is just an easy way to identify the payment method.
Thanks for the help everyone!
