Terminal services - 06/09/10 09:12 PM

Good day everyone,

Our terminal server users are experiencing sporadic a “hung application” event forcing them to close the app (AL, AR, AP etc) via the task manager and restarting.

This happens to strike at any time w/o warning.

We are running Win2K3 R2 x64 and have other applications running on the terminal server that never experience a difficulty.

As stated, the event viewer simply reports the hung application.

All applications are up to date.

Any ideas or technical information would be very helpful.

Thanks in advance and,

Cheers, JK

How are you determining that the application is "hung"? A "not responding" message in response to a mouse click does not mean it's hung. It may just be busy.

What other applications are you running?

Hi Andrew,

Any / all the modules run perfectly well and then suddenly they freeze up - natta - and the user has to kill the app and restart it.

Here is what the event viewer reports:

Hanging application APWIN.exe, version 8.2.1.26, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.
Hanging application Ledger.exe, version 9.0.3.22, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000
Hanging application Receivables.exe, version 9.0.1.35, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.

Thanks in advance and,

Cheers, JK

There are so many questions that could be asked here...

Is this an installation that has been running well for many months and has suddenly started giving trouble ? or is this a recent Adagio installation on the TS ?

There are different ways of implementing Adagio in a TS environment with respect to what Server (physical PC) is the Domain Controller, the File Server, the TS. They could be all different boxes, they could (but shouldn't) be all the same box or somewhere in between. How are you set up ?

As Andrew asked, what are the other apps that are running on the TS ? Are they database intensive apps like Adagio ? Are they setup the same way with respect to where the programs and data are located ?

Of course it might be solved on the forum, but to be honest, I believe that this is the type of issue best handled by a more direct interaction with your Adagio Consultant working in tandem with your TS guru to t/shoot the issue.

Good luck...

Google "version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000"

You get 149,000 hits...reported from many many different applications.

It is unlikely that Adagio is the cause of this error but someting in your setup or ??

Re: Terminal services - 06/10/10 04:25 PM

Thanks go to everyone for their input.

This is a completely new installation of all the modules on a Win2K3 x64 dual quad core terminal server - gobs of power, gobs of memory & gobs of space.

Several other applications run on it w/o any problems so I tend to trust the TS installation as no other apps are having any problems.

The server is used solely for TS and is not the domain controller.
The Adagio databases are on another server.

Q: Advantage Database Server is running on the server where the Adagio files are present. Could the ADS C/S service be stepping in?

Q: Is there a technical brief discussing rights etc.. for TS?

Thanks in advance and,

Cheers, JK

I just did ChkSys and got 1 error:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\MSVCR71.DLL Version: [] *** Error: Needs: [7.10.3052.4]

I'll keep hunting...

What's the "Advantage Database Server"?

We have Adagio sites running many users, some local, some remote on Terminal Server (and Citrix). Something at your site is different. I think that finding out what that "something" is will be impossible using the resources of the forum, but you never know.

Hi, John,

This file is a Microsoft file. Usually, you can find it in Windows\System32 and Softrak\System\WIN32 folders. If you don't have it in either location, you can probably find it on another workstation and then copy it to your Windows\System32 folder on the workstation you just ran ChkSys on.

Hi Andrew,

The Advantage Database Server is I think one of the core layers of the DB back end is it not?

I seem to recall a little bit ago that one of the fixes was to edit the file ADS... and enter some flag which I also found in the Advantage Database Server help.

So, my guess is that your dev guys are using a local copy of the server and I was thinking that maybe their is a collision with the local server and the 64 bit version of the database engine...

Geek geek geek...

"Advantage" is a Sage product. We don't use anything with that name. We're Adagio, and "ADS" stands for Adagio Data Source.

Google says that "Advantage Database Server" is from Sybase. It's definitely not related to Adagio. But it may also be unrelated to the problem.

Chksys can find the file, but is looking for a newer version. Check the properties of that file.

Re: Terminal services - 06/11/10 05:08 AM

Good morning gents!

Advantage Database server is from Sybase - they bought it from Extended Systems.

Andrew - thank you for straightening that one out - so my problems could therefore not have anything to do with the Advantage Database server - rats - I was hoping I was onto something.

Bruce - thank you for the follow up on the file - I checked the version of the file and it is exactly the one I copied to the system32 folder. I have just rebooted the server and reran ChkSys and it reports the same thing.

The servers we are running are 64bit so, all these modules are running 64bit...
