Hi - the AP person forgot to switch the cheques from last to first in the print, then paniced and pulled them out of the printer. There are about 50 cheques not printed or used, but the system thinks they were printed.
Is there anyway to reset the number to use these ones or not?

I can see why the system doesn't let you reset the number for security reasons, but is there a way?

I had the audit check list printed - it says they are voided - so I guess I got my own answer -ignore the question.

Hello:
If you go to Edit | Banks and edit your specific bank, you will see a tab labelled "Series". It will allow you to change the next cheque number in sequence.

"Void" means that when you saw the question, "Did the checks print OK?", you replied "No". That's OK. You can print again onto the cheques properly this time and use the same cheque numbers again.

You should be using blank cheque stock (or EFT), then you wouldn't have to worry what order the cheque paper was placed in the printer.

We are in the process of changing to Blank Cheque stock and phoned to our bank to see if magnetic ink was needed. They insisted that it was needed. What is your experience on this? Will the banks accept non-magnetic ink blank cheque stock cheques?

Print a small batch of cheques using a regular cartridge. See if they clear without incident. If your bank's clearing office phones and says they cannot read the cheques, then apologize profusely and say you forgot to put in the magnetic toner cartridge. Then buy a small printer for which magnetic toner cartridges are available and use it exclusively for printing cheques (its a good idea to have a separate cheque printer anyway). Our magnetic toner cartridge lasted 5 years (there's not a lot of ink on a cheque).

But really - magnetic ink in 2011, in these days of speech recognition and OCR of entire scanned books? Who are they kidding?

I agree with you Andrew. We will ask for forgiveness, rather than permission in this case. Very few of our clients have the physical space for a separate cheque printer.

Hi Lyndon,

Cheque printers can be very small and they don't need much of a duty cycle compared to the other printers. Really, the person printing cheques should be able to see the cheques while they are being printed.

Alvin:
I have printed cheques on an inkjet (no magnetic ink) for the past 3 years and have never had a single incident. Admittedly my volume is low but it's baffling to me why banks don't come clean on this issue and acknowledge that they use OCR technology. I'd try Andrew's suggestion just to give yourself some confidence first.
